So Last spring when it was my time to cross the bridge, I promised Mom when the time was right, when I found just the right dog to protect my family I would send him to her. For the last 7 months I've watched as my family went on without me. There were tears, and laughter, and then more tears. Somedays I didn't think they would EVER be ready. One of the upsides of being one of Santas' Rescue team, is that when we see a need, we are allowed to come back down to earth to take care of business. Well a couple weeks ago, Just as I was tearing through the Northern Lights with Zorro, Rocky... Oh so many of my AAHI friends have come to live with me the last couple months. Is it any wonder that the Northern lights have been so spectacular?? Oh back to the story at hand... A couple weeks ago We were busy making some particularly beautiful sky's above Alaska when suddenly I stopped... I knew that the special dog that would help heal my family's heart just had his heart broken. Really absolutely not his fault, he was a well loved pup but his family lost their home. In fact when they lost their home, they just left him in the house. I heard his heart break when he realized his family wasn't coming home for him. So I left my spot north of the bridge and took a run down to meet him. Sat down with him, told him everything was going to be OK, I knew a family that would love him to pieces and would take care of him forever.. but he had to promise one thing.. he HAD to take care of my people.. because I miss them as much as they miss me... "So puppy are you willing to kiss those tears away?" The puppy said yes... And so his journey began. He was taken into impound.. had to live at the police department for a week... just to make sure nobody was going to come for him... Then he went to Adopt A Husky He wasn't so sure about that whole car ride thing... but when he got to MB's, he walked in, and I whispered into her ear... "This puppy Eli, he is here to take care of my family! Go let Mom know he's arrived." And because I have the superpower to make people do what I want, MB e-mailed Mom and let her know that Eli had arrived at her house, and that he was "the dog". Now Just to be SURE Eli was really "the dog" Leo came out, he's better mannered than Eli was, but Eli was a much better match for my kids. He's about a year old, all puppy love.. needs to learn some manners, but then again.. so do my girls, they will grow up together. I whispered in Eli's Ear.. buddy this is your family... I broke them in for you DON"T MESS THIS UP! and Eli pulled out all the stops and showed he was their dog. All puppy loves, gentle kisses, crawled into the crate with the people puppies to give kisses. Showed although he LIKES being on the couch, he will respect boundaries if he's given them. Mom took him for a short run, he proved he had some trail manners. Really, Eli didn't give them a chance.. I didn't give them a chance, in fact I've been sending Dreams to C about her "black and white puppy with a stripy nose" for months just to make SURE that they didn't mess this up. And so, it's time for me to hand my red harness off to a new generation... I've got to go make sure Santa is getting all those reindeer rounded up for Christmas.. dang things keep wandering off.. Zorro said he would be MORE Than willing to help ;)....
Koehl Furbutt- (trust me the battle over names lasted a week...Wasn't until 2am when he wouldn't settle down that Mom went out to "have a talk with him" and Koehl is what came out.. he listened so it's sticking)
And for all those of you who have lost 4 legged's this year, trust me we're having fun up here. They miss you horribly, but we're happy, no longer in pain, running free. Lois is making sure we are well caref for. It was 12 yrs ago this week I was left in the shelter and my Mom and Dad came and rescued me.. and now 12 yrs to the week they first applied to Adopt a Husky, Koehl has found his home..
